Super is an asset that starts small, grows incrementally each year you are in the workforce, and if well managed accumulates to a significant pool of money which you draw an income from when you retire.

Younger people tend to find superannuation irritating, because it is money you cannot spend without meeting a condition of release. It may not seem like it now, but this is an excellent design feature.

Value is gained by paying attention to your super early in your career to set yourself up for later in life.

To reach a desired outcome, you need an agenda. A list of things that need to happen and regularly follow up on to make sure everything unfolds to plan. If you do not have an agenda for your super, perhaps you are yet to realise just how valuable it is.

Even though super funds claim to manage super for you, it is an asset that is so important that you must take steps to know more about it. You need to at least acquire financial awareness around super management and determine whether the model your super is currently operating within is sustainable and/or flawed.

Essential things to understand about super:

  • Your level of contribution has more impact on your super than fees charged.

  • If wisely invested (i.e. consistent with your circumstances), super can grow beyond your expectations.

  • Access to investment markets by all asset classes is vital in optimising super.

  • While you may need insurance (within super) for some of your life, you may not necessarily always need it. Be aware that as you age, premiums increase significantly and diminish your super balance.

Regular assessment of your circumstances and insurance needs is wise.

  • If possible, make a binding, non-lapsing nomination of beneficiary on your super asset.

  • Concentrate on acquiring or developing your financial skills every year of life.

Neglecting any of the points above noticeably damages the optimisation of your super asset.
